I had wanted to head out to one of the southeast Asian countries to do a bit of scuba diving for quite some time. This seemed like a pretty good opportunity. However at the end of the trip, scuba was the one thing we had skipped out on. The first couple of days were spent around Manilla. We scouted the walled Spanish city for its architecture and got into a major argument on money with the local rickshaw drivers. Saw churches checked out the nightlife, the underground music scene, the local cuisine and the local sights. One day was spent at Borachai, which was a more posh version of Goa (pretty awesome).
The last part of the trip was at Palawan. A couple of days of lying on the beach, island hopping, snorkeling cave exploration and a whole lot of relaxing was the order of the days. The island hopping was fun but the sunburn remained for a very long time. A lot of scenic locations with uninhabited islands and flying fish would keep anyone busy there. Snorkeling brought us close to sharks and sting rays. Would have wanted to scuba here but the resort was so remote, they didn't have guides or gears. The caves nearby had remains of a tribe long lost and was an interesting watch. The highlight of course was the firefly watching at night in the mangrove forests.
The other main attraction there was the underground river near Puerto Princessa. It requires a ferry to the island and then a boat inside. Spotted a few monkeys and monitor lizards there but they seem quite domestic. The boat ride itself was interesting. The boatman even more so. The ride could not have been so much fun without his constant commentary and jokes.
